Tankwa Karoo National Park – Wilderness Camp Chalets

South African National Parks put forward a tender for the uniquely challenging project of constructing “Wilderness Camp Chalets” in the Tankwa Karoo National Park.

Orange Tree Construction won the tender and has delivered the first phase of the development to SANParks, and is in the process of completing the second phase. The “Work for Water Poverty Relief Program” saw the entire first phase completed solely by manual labour.

Due to the location within the national park, the project has presented several daunting challenges. The remote location of the site meant that materials had to be transported over 200km’s of rough dirt roads. The workforce was obliged to contend with extreme temperatures, ranging from below zero during winter nights to in excess of 50ºC during summer days.

The client set strict parameters for the contractor, thereby forcing an amazing showcase of modern skills utilising traditional building materials, such as clay, straw, latte, lime, stone, wood and handmade clay bricks.
